S2H STEM work

Let’s Heat It Up S2H

During term one, Stage Two students have been making an inquiry into how heat and light energy makes things happen. Through different activities students have experimented with heat and light and observed and documented the changes. In the photos students from S2H are experimenting on different coloured containers absorbing or reflecting heat and the use of different materials as insulation. Students used their knowledge to make predictions of the outcome such as “black will be hotter and white cooler”. With further questioning the student explained more and added “it’s because the road is hot to walk on with bare feet in summer and the footpath isn’t.”

Students will use their knowledge from these experiments to design and engineer their own packaging container that needs to prevent chocolate from melting for 45 minutes. This will allow students to not only demonstrate their learning and understanding but to also apply it.
