Spelling in S3H

In S3H we practise our spelling words a number of different ways.

Buzz Off: Students stand in a circle and a word is chosen. Each student says one letter of the word. When the last letter of the word has been said, then these words are said (by the next four students) Buzz Off Hairy Legs, and the following student is out and sits down. Students can get out by not paying attention so it is a good way for them to focus. Each game lasts about 10 minutes and is a good break from sitting down.

Fan'N'Pick: Students work with their shoulder partner or table group. The spelling words are on strips of paper that are placed face down on the table. Students take it in turn to test their peers. They enjoy this activity because they never know which word will turn up next.

Quiz Quiz Trade: This activity involves each student walking around the room with a spelling word (on the piece of paper is also what type of word it is (noun, verb, adjective, preposition, etc.). They have their hand up in the air. When they pass another student who also has their hand up, they sticky high five and test each other on the words they have. They then swap words and move on to another person. This activity promotes peer learning. If a student Is unsure of the spelling of a word, the other person quickly shows them the word. This activity is fun because it involves moving around the room and interacting with friends.

Bingo: The week's spelling words are displayed on the board at the front of the room. Students write 10 words from the list in their book. The winner of the previous game gets to randomly cross out the words. The student who crosses out all of their chosen words first is the winner. They get to run the next game. The students have said they enjoy this because they get to yell "BINGO" and have the chance to run it.
