When you wake up in the morning, what are the first things you See, Hear, Smell, Touch, and Taste?

This term for Science and Technology S1H are learning about the Sense of Direction. Students are engaging and experimenting using the senses to observe and explore. As a result of these processes students are developing their knowledge on a range of scientific and technological concepts.

Taste

Students in S1H are making comparisons about what they like and dislike about familiar products in our environment. Students have been taste testing food items with the help of their senses of smell, sight and touch. They have tasted four distinct flavours; sweet (honey), sour (lemon), bitter (dark chocolate) and salty (pretzels and vegemite). In the ‘class experiment' students found that the ability to identify a flavour depends on the sense of smell as well as the sense of taste.

Smell

Students enjoyed the ‘secret scent' class experiment. They had to guess what the hidden substance was only by smelling! With this experiment, students had to give their nose a workout by using the sense of smell to guess what the matching scents are.

S1H can smell good things like ‘tasty' food, horrible smells like ‘dirty socks' and dangerous smells like ‘smoke' from a fire. They recognised certain smells as comforting, yummy, scary and exciting.

Students are exploring with their senses in a scientific way. This is a huge benefit to their learning as they are making personal connections, observations, drawing conclusions and collaborating with others in the class.
